Aleks Larsen discusses the Internet of Value and the current options for transferring digital assets and arbitrary data across different blockchains. Today, three options exist: notary schemes, relays, and hashed timelocks. Notary schemes utilize a trusted federation to swap information via sidechains that create synthetic information. Relays move information across chains without a federation, using built in contracts from one chain to another that enables information swapping. Finally, hashed timelocks, of Lighting Network fame, utilizes time bound encrypted contracts to swap assets between chains. To Larsen, interoperability is a necessary feature of a multi-blockchain environment: if multiple chains must exist, interoperability increases their overall utility.
